Get crackin’ Palm Beach: Stone crab season’s here, where to get your fill

Posted On: 10-14-2015

After an annual five-month, state regulation-mandated hiatus, the commercial and recreational harvesting season for stone crab claws—a pricey indulgence that’s one of Florida’s claims to fame—starts Oct. 15.

That means this week will yield some succulent claws—traditionally served chilled and with a mustard dipping sauce—at some of Palm Beach’s restaurants.

Stone crab harvesting season runs through May 15 and, until then, all restaurants on the island that serve seafood will feature stone crab claws, a market-price delicacy, on a daily or periodic basis.

Will any of them have claws on hand as early as Thursday?

Absolutely, especially because fishermen were allowed to put their traps in the water about a week ago and those traps are ready to haul up.

PB Catch, 251 Sunrise Ave. (www.pbcatch.com), expects to have claws—in sizes from medium to colossal—starting on the 15th.

The restaurant serves them with housemade mustard sauce and/or Bernaise aioli.

Among restaurants in town that have made arrangements with purveyors to have stone crab claws—in a variety of sizes—by Friday (Oct. 16) are The Seafood Bar and Flagler Steakhouse at The Breakers (1 S. County Road; www.thebreakers.com ); and restaurants at the Four Seasons (2800 S. Ocean Blvd.; www.thefourseasons.com/palmbeach), including the resort’s Graze, AB&G and Jové Kitchen & Bar.

Others include Meat Market (191 Bradley Place; www.meatmarketpalmbeach.com), which expects to serve colossal claws starting Friday, and Nick & Johnnie’s (207 Royal Poinciana Way; www.nickandjohnniespb.com), where jumbo-sized claws are “the only way to go,” especially “with a light mustard and on crushed ice,” according to Nick & Johnnie’s executive chef, Kent Thurston.

Given that many island and area restaurants will be serving stone crab, be sure to contact your favorite dining establishments to inquire about their stone crab offerings.
