Design honors: Five Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach winners

Posted On: 05-06-2018

Every season, the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach recognizes homes on the island for excellence in historically sensitive design.

Here’s a look at the 2017-18 winners.

Robert I. Ballinger Award: This season, two major renovations of large, landmarked estates were honored. Chuck and Deborah Royce were recognized for their top-to-bottom restoration and renovation of Lido, a lakefront house that dates to at least 1919 at 10 S. Lake Trail. Yoram and Pnina Apolonia Weisfisch also were honored for restoring and renovating their North End oceanfront house at 280 N. Ocean Blvd.

The Weisfisches and the Royces chose the same professionals to oversee their architectural and landscape revisions — Jacqueline Albarran, principal of SKA Architect + Planner, and landscape designer Jorge Sanchez of SMI Landscape Architecture.

Polly Earl Award: The award recognizes projects at smaller-scale properties. Keith Johnson and his husband, Glen Senk, were honored for the renovation-and-restoration project at their landmarked house at 130 Chilean Ave. They bought the Spanish Mediterranean-style home nearly three years ago. The project was designed by the architectural firm Fairfax & Sammons of Palm Beach and New York City.

Elizabeth L. and John H. Schuler Award: Architect Mark Ferguson, a partner in Ferguson & Shamamian Architects, accepted the award for new architecture for his design for a compound at 310, 320 and 330 Dunbar Road. Real estate broker Lawrence A. Moens helped homeowners Leni and Peter May assemble three properties for their new estate, beginning in late 2014 with the vacant lot on the lake. The estate comprises the south side of the lake block between the Lake Trail and Bradley Place.

Lesly S. Smith Landscape Award: Heidi Greene and Michael Kluger’s South Florida homage to a garden in Provence was honored. Landscape designer Fernando Wong of Fernando Wong Outdoor Living Design accepted the award with colleague Tim Johnson for the design of the grounds on the half-acre property of the 1920s-era house at 415 Seaspray Ave.
