Fatio-designed home recommended for landmark status

The Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously voted Wednesday to recommend a private home at 17 Middle Road be designated a landmark.

The home was built in 1934 by John C. King. The home, now owned by Cynthia and Sadrian Lee Kellogg, was considered for landmark designation based on the fact that it represents the culture of the post-Depression time period, it embodies the popular colonial building style of the time and it represents the work of a notable Palm Beach architect, Maurice Fatio.

Town preservation consultant Janet Murphy described Fatio as “one of the most sought-after architects” of the 1920s to the 1940s. The two-story home is an example of Colonial Revival style with British Colonial influences she said.

“Fatio likely mixed a number of the elements and styles to give 17 Middle Road a less formal and more updated appearance,” Murphy said. The wood-paneled door, the balcony above it with full-height louvered shutters and sash windows with similar shutters are all examples of the Colonial Revival style of the home, she said.

The house underwent construction in 2011 to add a two-car garage with rooms above it to the north end of the property. The design alterations were done in a way that complemented the historic style of the house, Murphy said. Commission member Paige Lee Huffy lauded the addition.

“I know the house fairly well through several owners, and this transformation is absolutely gorgeous,” Huffy said.

Commission member Ted Cooney added that it’s important to make sure recent construction on older homes doesn’t “undermine integrity of the home,” agreeing that this construction preserved the intended style.

The Town Council will vote on the landmark recommendation on Feb. 10.
