Goodbye Omphoy: Resort changes name to Tideline Ocean Resort & Spa

The Omphoy Ocean Resort hotel is no more.

The 134-room hotel at 2842 S. Ocean Blvd. is now Tideline Ocean Resort & Spa.

The name debuted Monday and coincides with a change in management. Earlier this year, Palm Beacher Jeff Greene chose Kimpton Hotel & Restaurants to operate the boutique hotel.

Greene, a real estate investor, bought the Omphoy, then just two years old, in 2011. His search for a company to manage the hotel took years, Greene said Tuesday. Part of his research included staying at Kimpton-run hotels in New York, Boston and Miami with his wife, Mei Sze.

“It was always my intention to align ourselves with a top-notch company managing high-end boutique hotels, which is what Kimpton is. It took us a few years and we talked to a lot of people but we finally came up with Kimpton,” Greene said.

Kimpton operates more than 60 hotels, and almost 70 restaurants and lounges in 26 cities; it ranked first in customer satisfaction in the Market Metrix Hospitality Index in the “upper upscale” segment. The San Francisco-based firm took over the hotel Aug. 1, when Abe Liao arrived as general manager. He succeeded Tom Mulroy.

Major changes include renovating and expanding its spa at a cost of more than $1 million, revamping food service and educating staff about Kimpton’s approach to hospitality, according to Liao.

“It’s an approachable type of service,” Liao said. That means the staff knows every guest by name — and addresses them formally or informally, based on guest preference, he said. Because the hotel is small, the staff can give each guest ample attention, he said.

“It’s aggressive on our end. We want to relate to people in a personal way that will resonate with them and inspire them to share stories about their experience,” he said.

The new 5,900-square-foot Tideline Spa, which was expanded by converting lobby-level meeting space, will open in February, Liao said.

In mid-November, Todd Wiss came on board as executive chef. He held that position at Firefly, a restaurant inside Hotel Madera, a Kimpton property in Washington, D.C. Wiss is creating a locally inspired menu.

“He was known for putting a 90-pot garden on the roof of Hotel Madera,” Liao said.

The vegetables and herbs grown there are used in the restaurant’s offerings every day. “He’s considering doing that here,” Liao said.

Kimpton is also pet-friendly. Tideline doesn’t restrict dogs based on breed or size and doesn’t charge extra for pets, Liao said.

Kimpton shares his goals for Tideline, Greene said. “I want this to be the very best hotel in Palm Beach,” he said. Greene said he doesn’t anticipate changing room rates, but said supply and demand will dictate what the hotel charges for rooms.
