Landmarked home on Golfview Road sells for $9.6 million

Angela and Arthur L. “Art” Williams Jr. now own two historic Palm Beach homes — one on Golfview Road and another for sale on the North End.

A deed recorded Monday shows that Angela Williams paid $9.6 million for 4 Golfview Road, a 1922 Mediterranean-style house designed by noted society architect Marion Sims Wyeth.

Featuring a third-story polyagonal tower, the landmarked house was sold by Penelope and Marion Hugh Antonini, who had carried out an extensive renovation. With about 5,200 square feet of living space, inside and out, the four-bedroom residence and guest cottage stand opposite the Everglades Golf Course on a private road a block south of Worth Avenue.

The Williamses, meanwhile, recently reduced the price of their other home, at 1545 N. Ocean Way, from $45 million to $39.95 million. Named Windansea, that 1937 estate was designed by society architect Maurice Fatio and has 280 feet of direct ocean frontage on 2 acres just south of the inlet. They have owned the house — which the town will consider this season for landmark-protection status — since 1996, according to property records.

‘Same objectives as Wyeth’The Antoninis bought the Golfview Road house in 2005 for a recorded $6.83 million, property records show.

A little more than a year ago, the couple paid just under $16 million for another landmarked house, one of the island’s most recognizable — Casa Eleda at 920 S. Ocean Blvd. The Antoninis are renovating that property, which is known locally as the “ham-and-cheese” house because of its horizontal banding in brick and stone.

The Golfview Road house had been co-listed at $9.95 million by Corcoran Group agents Alison Newton and Jim McCann. When the Antoninis bought Casa Eleda, Newton acted on their behalf in the deal opposite McCann, who represented the sellers, Michigan businessman Charles “Chuck” E. Becker and his wife, Michelle.

Agent Nancy Mendel of Sotheby’s International Realty acted on the buyer’s side of the Golfview Road sale. She also has the listing for the Williamses’ North End home.

No one on either side of the sale would comment, citing confidentiality agreements. But in a Daily News article last November about the house, Marion Antonini described the renovation overseen by architect Jeffery Smith of Smith Architectural Group.

“We used the same objectives as Wyeth,” Antonini said then. “We wanted to bring the house back and to utilize every space available from a living and entertainment standpoint. The structure was very solid, and we knew we could build on it.

”The L-shaped house’s front lawn and lap pool are hidden from the street by a walled courtyard. Landscaping is by Nievera Williams Design.

Interior features include pecky-cypress ceilings, original Cuban tile floors, Venetian-plaster walls and a fireplace with an antique stone mantelpiece.

Ties to HuttonWith ties to Connecticut, Marion Antonini’s wide-ranging career has included tenure as principal of the New York-based Kolberg & Co. as well as leadership roles at several companies related to the private-equity firm. He also is the former CEO of Welbilt Corp., a manufacturer of commercial food-service equipment.

Term-life insurance entrepreneur Art Williams Jr. founded A.L. Williams & Associates, which since 1991 has been known as Primerica Financial Services.

The Golfview Road house was among the first built in a development pioneered in the early 1920s by Wyeth and Harry Raymond Corwin. Financing was said to be provided by Edward F. Hutton, who was then married to Marjorie Merriweather Post. The couple’s first Palm Beach home, Hogarcito, stands on the same block.
