Landmarked Palm Beach house fetches $6.26 million, deed shows

Posted On: 01-25-2019

In an off-market sale, Debra and Anson M. Beard Jr. have parted with their landmarked Midtown house near Worth Avenue for a recorded $6.26 million.

The Beards sold the house, which is next door to the landmarked residential complex known as Major Alley, to Stephanie and Lawrence Flinn Jr., according to the deed recorded last last week.

The Beards had owned the two-story Bermuda-style house in the lake block of the street since 2006, when Anson Beard bought it for a recorded $4.55 million from the late builder-and-developer Bill Elias, property records show.

The house has four bedrooms, a cabana and 4,637 square feet of living space, inside and out, according to a previous sales listing.

The town granted the house landmark status in 2005. According to the landmarks consultant’s report, the Peruvian Ave. house was built in 1919 as a wood-frame vernacular-style building but was given a Bermuda-style transformation in the 1930s by noted society architect Howard Major. Major also designed the six residences to the east in Major Alley.

The house was converted into a two-family residence in 1973 but later returned to its one-family configuration in a renovation overseen by architect Gene Pandula, a former Landmarks Preservation commissioner, according to town records.

The Flinns own a waterfront residence on Jupiter Island and have ties to Rye, N.Y., property records show. The deed lists their address as a penthouse on West 22nd Street in New York City.

Lawrence Flinn retired after a career spent building his fortune in the satellite and cable-television industries. By the late 1990s, he had sold his interests in the cable network UVCI, which at one time was the 42nd-largest multiple system operator of cable TV systems in the country, according to an online biographical sketch. His resume also includes serving as chairman and CEO of Privet Capital Florida.

Anson Beard Jr. spent 17 years at Morgan Stanley, where he “built the company’s equity business into a global leader” and was described as “Wall Street royalty” in a 2015 Wall Street Journal article.

The Beards and the Flinns couldn’t be reached. Because the property was not listed for sale in the Palm Beach Board of Realtors Multiple Listing Service, it’s unclear whether any real estate agents or agencies were involved.
