New boutique Crane & Lion brings ‘athleisure’ brand to Palm Beach

A new brand on the island wants Palm Beach women to still look good while working out, taking a walk on the beach or running errands around town.

Boston-based Crane & Lion, named after two complementary yoga poses, labels itself a fashion-forward “athleisure” brand. The boutique, at 108 N. County Road, opened on Oct. 29.

“It’s a little bit more high-end athletic wear,” said Nantucket store manager Kylie Tubero, who was in town last week. “It’s a mixture of active and lifestyle. We like to focus on clothes that you can transition throughout the entire day. Our wrap sweaters and our moto jacket you can throw on after your yoga class, and go to dinner and drinks with friends. It’s not something that’s just for working out. It’s chic, fashionable clothes.”

Founder John Udelson said he started the brand because he wanted to make clothes to support a woman’s whole life, not just the fitness part. He said he decided to open an island store — the first outside of Massachusetts — because Palm Beach has the same “easy-going, relaxing and beautiful” feel as Nantucket, and a lot of the Nantucket customers also live or visit Palm Beach.

“I made a number of trips down to Palm Beach and rented a house on the island,” he said. “I fell in love with the place and intuitively knew it would be a good place to connect with women who would love our clothing.”

The brand’s leggings, tights, shorts, tops, sports bras and outwear range from $55 to $200. Sizes range from 0 to 12.

Palm Beach store manager Juliet Kennelly said the clothes fit all ages and all body types. She said the island market was missing the athleisure style.

“Palm Beach women like to be put together and so I think having something that they can go to the gym in and then throw something on to look a little cuter … it’s a great fit,” Kennelly said. “Even if you’re not comfortable wearing athletic clothes, you can come in and find something.”

Added Tubero: “I think people who come down here are active. It’s warm. It’s beautiful. They like to look good, too. So we’re a perfect mix of both.”

An active dress and maxi dress are unique to the Palm Beach location. The blue and green colors also cater to the island lifestyle.

Tubero said the brand, which started in 2014, is smaller and more “boutique-y feeling,” so the customer experience is better than bigger brands. The brand’s style is also different.

“We gear towards the more basics, and staples,” she said. “I think some athleisure brands right now are trying to be super trendy and include cutouts, neon colors, animal prints; ours is more mature, classic, clean.”

Kennelly said the company is working on scheduling some events for the season, and possibly teaming up with Studios Etc. next door, which includes Momentim Cycle, Labarre and Pilates.

“Traffic has been good,” Kennelly said. “We have the spin studio next door so that brings in a lot of people. We also get a lot of lookers as they drive by.”
