North End appeal: Bermuda-style house modern and sits on half-acre

Bruce Taylor, on his daughter’s recommendation, visited Palm Beach in 2012, and ended up staying.

“I was in Nantucket, and I had never been to Palm Beach,” Taylor recalled. “My daughter, Tiffany, who has a design studio in Dallas, came to the island for business, and she told me I should see Palm Beach. I thought, well, why not? I’ll go for the winter.

”Now, he splits his time between Palm Beach and his Nantucket, Mass., home. In just two years, he’s upsized twice. He started out with a South End condominium and then headed to the North End, buying a house on Atlantic Avenue and, later, one on North County Road.

And he’s about to upsize once again.

“I moved into a condo on Sloan’s Curve on Dec. 1, 2012, and I bought the house at 230 Atlantic on Dec. 27, and moved in. The condo sat there unused. I’m an impulsive buyer,” he quipped.

Then, in March 2014, he bought his present home — a six-bedroom, six-bathroom, two-half-bath house at 720 N. County Road, with 8,541 square feet of living space, inside and out. As he eyes a new residence, he has listed the house with agent Gregory Weadock of Brown Harris Stevens for $11.5 million. Weadock also has the listing for Taylor’s other house on Atlantic Avenue.

“When I first crossed the bridge, I knew only one person in town,” Taylor said. “I didn’t know the area or understand the market, but I did get my feet wet, and I want to end up in a larger home on the water.

”At the corner of Ridgeview Drive, the North County Road house stands a couple of blocks south of the Palm Beach Country Club. Built in 2005, the house caught his attention, because “it’s pretty,” he says. “I like the overall look and feel of the house, and it’s (relatively) new construction, so maintenance free.

”To better showcase the house, he has changed the landscaping and added outdoor lighting.

“The house sits on a half-acre, with a nice big backyard. And my grandkids love to be in the pool,” he added.

The two-story Bermuda-style house’s front façade features quoins at the corners and a portico, supported by columns, that shelters wood double doors, flanked by bull’s-eye windows.

The grand foyer has a graceful curved stairway, a marble floor and an elevator. The powder room has a dramatic decorative scheme with its onyx floor and gold-leaf tray ceiling. A mahogany-paneled library stands just south of the foyer and is appointed with a hardwood floor, dentil molding, built-in cabinetry and a fireplace.

West of the foyer are the living and dining rooms, which also have hardwood floors and finely detailed moldings. French doors in both rooms open to the covered loggia, pool, patio and gardens. Additional features in the living room include a marble fireplace and gold-leaf decoration on the moldings above the doors.

An office is directly off the foyer to the north, and the kitchen, breakfast room and family room also are in the north portion of the house. The center-island kitchen features a stone floor, marble countertops and professional-grade appliances.

Extending from the family room, a loggia shelters a summer kitchen that connects the main house to the three-car garage. Above the garage is a guest apartment with a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchenette.

Upstairs in the main house, the master suite includes a bedroom with a sitting room and two marble-outfitted bathrooms. Features in the suite include hardwood floors, decorative moldings and tray ceilings. French doors open to a covered terrace.

Also upstairs are three ensuite guest bedrooms.
