Palm Beach homes: Campbell Soup heir pays $5.4 million for North End house

Posted On: 06-18-2019

John Strawbridge Crompton bought 280 List Road from Robert I. Kurzon, who lived there with his late wife, Jane, records show.

An heir to the Campbell Soup fortune has paid a recorded $5.4 million for a renovated 1950s-era house on the North End of Palm Beach, according to the deed recorded today.

John Strawbridge Crompton bought the five-bedroom, two-story house at 280 List Road, the deed shows. He is a great-grandchild of Campbell Soup founder John T. Dorrance.

Businessman Robert I. Kurzon was the seller, acting as trustee of a revocable trust in his name. He and his late wife, Jane, in 2007 paid $4.2 million for the house, which has 5,503 square feet of living space, inside and out, property records show. The house was homesteaded in Robert Kurzon’s name in the latest tax rolls, courthouse records show.

The house stands on a lot measuring a little more than a half-acre, nine streets north of the Palm Beach Country Club.

The traditional-style house was built in 1959, property records show. It underwent a total renovation and expansion in 2002, and the Kurzons also made improvements, building records show.

Corcoran Group agents Paulette Koch and Dana Koch were the listing agents in this week’s deal. They listed the house for sale at $5.6 million in mid-January and it was under contract by the end of April, according to records in the Palm Beach Board of Realtors Multiple Listing Service.

Agent Christopher Leavitt of Douglas Elliman Real Estate acted on behalf of the buyer. Leavitt and Dana Koch declined to discuss the transaction.

Crompton’s mother is Diana Strawbridge Crompton Norris Wister, whose grandfather founded Campbell Soup. She has longtime family ties to Palm Beach and a home in the Estate Section, property records show. The extended family descended from Dorrance also has ties to Pennsylvania.

Crompton has bought other property in Palm Beach and Gulf Stream, the affluent coastal town south of Palm Beach, public records indicate. Most recently, voting records have listed his address as a Gulf Stream house at 3500 Polo Drive, which was purchased in 2009 for a recorded $4.8 million by a limited liability company named Wister Crompton Investments LLC. That property also is mentioned in court documents related to Crompton’s 2017 divorce from Amy Hemmis Crompton.

The 2002 renovation of the List Road house was overseen by its then-owners, Palm Beach real estate broker Linda A. Gary and businessman Michael Belisle. That project reworked the floor plan and the grounds, which include a rear loggia facing the landscaped backyard and swimming pool. Gary and Belisle sold the house in 2005, records show.

The Koches’ sales listing described the house’s “beautifully scaled rooms and high ceilings throughout.” Among the house’s features is an oversized eat-in kitchen accessing the family room and the pool area. The house also has a formal dining room and an attached two-car garage at the rear of the house, accessed from Via Marila.

Before they bought the house April 2007, Kurzon and his late wife owned a house nearby on Monterey Road, property records show. The couple also had ties to New York City and other cities in New York and New Jersey, public records show. Jane Kurzon died in 2012.

Business records link Robert Kurzon to companies named Kurzon Supply Corp. and Wencar Crop.
