Palm Beach homes: South Ocean Blvd. house in process of being demolished

Posted On: 10-25-2018

Crews were busy this week demolishing a house that had greeted drivers for decades at the intersection of South County Road and South Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach.

The Architectural Commission last month approved razing the house, with its curved façade and vaguely Art Deco styling. At 888 S. Ocean Blvd., the house stands just outside the neighborhood that closes to through-traffic when President Donald Trump visits Mar-a-Lago.

In August, British online real estate entrepreneur Alex Chesterman, who already owned the house next door, paid $10.75 million for No. 888. That 1951 house recently underwent a major renovation and addition.

The property is immediately south of the house Chesterman bought at 880 S. Ocean Blvd. about a year ago for $8.75 million and is renovating.

Crews are clearing the lot next door, which measures nearly a half-acre, to make way for a new pool house, swimming pool and gardens for Chesterman’s main residence. The August deal also gave Chesterman second beachfront parcel with a cabana on the east side of the coastal road. In all, his estate measures eight-tenths of an acre with more than 185 feet of deeded beachfront.

Last month, the Architectural Commission green-lighted almost all of the plans for the pool house and pool area, although the board asked for revisions to a driveway gate and nearby pedestrian door on the perimeter wall facing South County Road. Those plans are expected to be reviewed in November.

Michael Perry of MP Design is the designer for the pool cabana project and drew up the plans for the renovation of the main house.

Agents Dana Koch and Paulette Koch of the Corcoran Group acted on behalf of Chesterman in both his purchases.

In the August deal, broker Lawrence Moens of Lawrence A. Moens Associates represented the sellers, Dr. Roosey and Mary Theresa Khawly. Last year, agent Jim McCann, then of Corcoran but today with Premier Estate Properties, had the listing for the main house when Chesterman bought it from Bob and Connie Dwyer.

Chesterman, who is married to Angie Chesterman and has strong ties to London, founded Zoopla.co.uk, a digital media company and real estate website that serves Great Britain. He recently stepped down from the chairmanship of the company, which was sold to Silver Lake Partners, a New York City equity firm.
