Palm Beach lakefront house built in 1958 sells for $7.9 million

Posted On: 06-05-2017

The longtime lakefront home of the late Sandra Taylor Kaupe has sold for a recorded $7.9 million in Palm Beach.

Dr. Bradford H. Hack and his wife, Dr. Carol Humble-Hack, bought 1185 N. Lake Way as trustees of the Hack Family Trust, according to the deed recorded today by the Palm Beach County Clerk’s office. Hack, an orthopedic surgeon, and his wife, an anesthesiologist, own a homesteaded house on Reef Road at the northern tip of the island, property records show.

Corcoran Group agent Suzanne Frisbie, who represented the buyers’ side, wouldn’t identify her clients by name. But she described them as a “lovely North End couple” with grown children and ties to California.

“They had been looking to transition from an interior property to the lake,” Frisbie said, declining to comment further.

The four-bedroom house on North Lake Way, built in 1958, is “prime for renovations” or replacement, according to the sales description prepared by listing broker Lawrence Moens of Lawrence A. Moens Associates. The residence has 5,800-square-foot of living space, inside and out.

With about 90 feet of lakefront, the lot measures nearly a half-acre, midway between the Palm Beach Country Club and the north tip of the island. Among its features is a deepwater dock.

Moens listed the property for $7.95 million in mid-March and had it under contract about six weeks later, according to property records in the Palm Beach Board of Realtors Multiple Listing Service. He couldn’t be reached.

The deed shows the house was sold by one of Kaupe’s daughters, Shari T. Wilson, along with attorney Richard Paladino, acting as trustee of trusts for two of Kaupe’s granddaughters.

Kaupe, a competitive angler who won many fishing tournaments, died at 80 in February 2016. She had been appointed a commissioner of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in 2002.

Kaupe lived in Palm Beach for some 50 years, although it’s unclear from property records exactly when she bought the house. She had co-owned it with her late husband, Dr. Arthur Kaupe, before his death in 1988, according to courthouse filings.

Sandra Kaupe moved to Palm Beach with her first husband, the late Don Wilson, a professional hydroplane racer who died in 1966, according to her obituary.

Hack and his wife own their other home at 111 Reef Road through a trust, property records show. And in April, Frisbie listed the four-bedroom, 4,169-square-foot house — built in 1956 — for sale at just under $3 million.
