Palm Beachers’ estates ranked among country’s priciest in online list

A new online ranking of the most expensive estates for sale in the country features, to no one’s surprise, a notable Palm Beach property — Il Palmetto, Netscape billionaire Jim Clark’s South End estate, which is priced at $137 million.

The list compiled by Canadian real estate portal Point2Homes.com ranked Clark’s ocean-to-lake estate No. 8 based on the prices listed for 20 properties across the country.

Clark’s estate at 1500 S. Ocean Blvd. entered the market in late August, marketed by agent Cristina Condon of Sotheby’s International Realty through the agency’s website and her own site. Used on vacations by Clark and his wife, Kristy Hinze-Clark, the house presides over 5.14 acres with about 340 feet of beachfront to the east and 360 feet of waterfront on the Lake Worth Lagoon. In all, the house and outbuildings have 10 bedrooms and 68,831 square feet of living space, inside and out. The house was designed by noted society architect Maurice Fatio and later extensively restored.

There’s another house with a Palm Beach connection on the list, owned by Clark’s South End neighbor, real estate and energy billionaire Jeff Greene, but that property isn’t on the island. And it’s also not for sale, according to California real estate agent Joyce Rey, who in late 2014 listed Greene’s Palazzo di Amore on Lania Lane in Beverly Hills at $195 million.

Although Green and his wife, Mei Sze, ended up slashing the price of the 25-acre estate by $46 million, he told CNN a year ago that he had taken the 21-bedroom, 53,000-square-foot property off the market and was going to use some of its property as farmland. Via email, Rey confirmed that the estate, with its 35,000-square-foot main house, was not being actively marketed for sale but is available for lease. In any case, Point2Homes’ list ranked it in the No. 6 spot.

A blog item at Point2Homes.com about the list did not include the sources used for the price information, and a spokeswoman for the company could not be reached for clarification. It appears some of the properties are listed for sale in multiple listing services, while others are being marketed only through agency websites or, perhaps, through private listings.

Top of the list

Heading the list is $200 million estate at 594 Mapleton Drive in Los Angeles, one of nine California estates in the rankings. At the bottom of the list is an $84.5 million property at 8 E. 62nd St. in New York City.

Second on the list, priced at $195 million, is Gemini, the billionaire Ziff family’s ocean-to-lake estate on 16 acres near the Boynton Beach Inlet in Manalapan. It entered the market early last year.

With a fortune stemming from media and investments, the Ziff family has completely renovated the 1940s-era estate at 2000 S. Ocean Blvd. It about 1,200 feet of beach frontage and about 1,300 feet of waterfront on the irregularly shaped side facing the lagoon. The property includes the 12-bedroom residence and a seven-bedroom guesthouse among its outbuildings. Taken together, they all offer nearly 85,000 square feet of living space, inside and out, with 33 bedrooms. Designed by society architect Marion Sims Wyeth, the estate was later completely renovated. Premier Estate Properties in Boca Raton has the listing for through brokers Carmen N. D’Angelo Jr. and Joseph G. Liguori, and agent Gerard P. Liguori.

Seasonal Palm Beacher Paul Fireman and his wife, Phyllis, also have a home on the list, although the property, ranked No. 12 with a price of $90 million, is outside Boston at 150 Woodland Road in Brookline, Mass. The Reebock founder’s 14-acre estate features a 24-room main house with 26,000 square feet of living space. The property was listed in September by agents Jonathan P. Radford and Deborah M. Gordon of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage of New England.

One other Florida property is on the list. Broward County’s Le Palais Royal, a newly built, 60,500-square-foot mansion developed on speculation at 935 Hillsboro Mile, is ranked No. 4, priced at $159 million.

Two other estates are on the list but aren’t ranked because their prices are “undisclosed,” according to disclaimer included with the list. Both are in Southampton, N.Y.: One is named “La Dune” on Gin Lane and the other is at 317 Murray Place.
