Royal Poinciana Plaza restoration in Palm Beach nears finish line

The Royal Poinciana Plaza is almost ready for its close-up.

Construction fence surrounds the central courtyard, the fronds on some newly trucked-in palm trees are still banded, and workers are attending to minor restoration and landscaping details.

But the major beautification project will be completed within several days, according to Alexandra Patterson, on-site project manager for plaza leaseholder Up Markets.

“It’s so exciting to finally get to this point,” she said.

Revitalizing the green space between the two main commercial buildings by adding citrus trees, shade trees and more places to sit outdoors was a key goal of the project. The two buildings were built in 1957 in Regency style.

Up Markets bought controlling interest in the 12-acre, John Volk-designed plaza in August 2014 and quickly recruited Smith & Moore Architects and Nievera Williams Landscape Design to mastermind the revitalization. It involved adding shade trees and flowering plants to the north and south sides of the main buildings, installing cast-stone sidewalks and altering the flow of traffic and entrance and exit points. Other elements include restoring the courtyard fountains, repainting the buildings and updating electrical systems.

“Eight months ago, we started construction and now we are days away from finishing,” Patterson said. ” To have conversations with people where they understand what all the hard work was all about and see the fruits of our labor is truly rewarding.”

Newly planted shade trees, shrubs and ground cover, along with new concrete pads for tables and chairs, give the nearly finished west-side courtyard a richer, more inviting look.

And workers are cleaning and resealing the signature black-and-white “checkerboard” terrazzo squares on interior walkways. The long-faded colors are fully saturated once again.

“I think people are looking forward to spending time in these courtyards,” Patterson said, “and so I can’t even possibly describe how happy we all are.”
