South End condo was fine fit for New York couple

Before they retired, Donald and Karon Dixon maintained a busy work schedule that included plenty of international travel — and so they always pined to get home for quiet weekends. They had two nice spots to choose from, Donald Dixon explains: their New York City apartment in Manhattan’s Sutton Place or their beach house at Long Island Beach, N.J.

But then, on a cruise, they met a Palm Beach couple who extolled the virtues of the island. And the Dixons changed directions, so to speak.

“I came to Palm Beach with my son and fell in love with the island,” Donald says. “Then I coerced Karon to take a drive to Palm Beach (from New York) with me, and the night before we left, just in case, I looked on the Internet and found an apartment that was in our taste.

”They did end up looking at it, as well as more than two-dozen other condominiums. They ended up buying an apartment in the Sloan’s Curve complex at 2100 S. Ocean Blvd., one of the South End’s anchor resort-style developments.

That was three years ago, and they’ve since become enamored snowbirds. But since they’ve retired, Donald, an engineer, is ready for a new project. They have bought a similar unit in the 2000 Building — one of four buildings in the South End complex — and have made plans to renovate it.

“We were going to sell the second unit, but we decided to renovate it to create our dream apartment, and sell this one,” Donald says. “I like the high-tech look and we want to make our new apartment ultramodern.

”As such, they are selling No. 105N, their three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath unit on the first residential floor of the 2100 building. All of the rooms access a balcony that wraps around the apartment to the south and west, offering views of the Intracoastal Waterway, the pool, the tennis courts and the ocean.

The apartment has 3,136 square feet of interior space and 128 square feet on the balconies. Agent Diane Brill of Fite Shavell & Associates has listed it at $2.195 million, and the furniture can be purchased separately.

Among the features, a private stairway leads from the apartment to a private poolside cabana with a bathroom. In addition to the pool, amenities at Sloan’s Curve include a 24-hour-staffed gatehouse, door staff, a fitness center, a tennis facility with staff on-site and a pool with an attendant. The Dixons’ unit also comes with two parking spaces.

The apartment had been totally redone by its previous owner, Donald explains.

“He did a massive rebuild with new floors, Venetian plaster, new everything. He ended up only staying 10 days in the apartment. It was untouched.

”All they needed to do was decorate, and the Dixons asked a friend, Myrna Corliss, the head designer for DDC/Minotti, to come down from Manhattan to furnish it for them.

“We bought a lot of good contemporary furniture, mostly Italian Minotti. We wanted something sophisticated with a New York architectural styling,” Donald says.

Floors are covered in limestone throughout much of the unit, a key element of the home’s color palette — off-white with earth tones. An octagonal foyer features a tray ceiling with soffit and recessed lighting.

From the foyer to the north, a hallway leads to two guest-bedroom suites and a laundry room. A gallery off the foyer opens into the living room, dining area, office and kitchen.

A doorway from the gallery, meanwhile, leads south to the master suite, which has a bathroom appointed with walnut cabinetry, granite countertops, a soaking tub and walk-in shower. Other bathrooms feature custom anigre-wood cabinetry and subway-tile accents.

Interior features elsewhere include the living room’s decorative multi-stepped tray ceiling and anigre built-in units; and double doors of frosted glass framed in ebony from the dining area to the office. The kitchen also has anigre cabinets along with granite countertops, stainless-steel appliances and a tiled backsplash.
