Snowbirds Carole and Jay Weitzman from Haverford, Pa., bought their home near Mar-a-Lago 19 years ago. And they plan to stay forever, Jay says. “Very few places are like Palm Beach.”

The Palm Beach lifestyle suits them. Carole loves the casual atmosphere during the day, and, in the evenings, Jay likes the coat-and-tie formality at their favorite restaurants. They love walking along Worth Avenue and the beach. And then, Sea Loafers, their 90-foot Broward Motor Yacht, keeps them young at heart, Carole says.

“It’s the only time we really relax and enjoy,” Carole said of boating. “And it gives us great memories of our grandchildren.”

During the year, they come to town regularly, but summer is their favorite time. Two of their daughters and two grandchildren live nearby; the weather is nice; the staff at restaurants call them by name; and, adds Jay, summer is when he shops. “Everything is on sale. It’s heaven.”

Recently Jay talked about his love of boating.

Are you new to boating? Long-time boaters? Boat fanatics?

We aren’t fanatics. When we first married, we had a 27-foot Chris-Craft. We had a crib on it for our first daughter. We’d go to Red Bank, Point Pleasant and the Channel Club on Mammoth Beach in Atlantic City. We gave up boating for a while, then we had a 48-foot boat that we kept in Annapolis, Md., for two or three years. My wife and I love boating.

How did you get into boating?

We used our first boat for short weekends. I was trying to build up a business, and it was very hard to get away. The boat was an easy way out for us. We had a lot of fun with it.

Describe your boat and where do you keep it?

About 7 or 8 years ago, my wife said to me, why don’t we get a fun boat that our whole family can enjoy? We began looking and we wound up seeing the boat we presently own. It had everything that we could imagine for our family, and it has lived up to our expectations.

Our boat, Sea Loafers, was made by Broward Motor Yachts. They make boats for comfort, and that’s the only way to describe our boat. It’s very roomy, very comfortable, and has all the amenities we could possibly want. We even have a full-size piano onboard. We use it five days every month and a month every summer. We keep it at the Palm Beach Yacht Club, which is a great place to have a boat.

This summer, we went to Nassau and we’ve been to Harbour Island, Eleuthera, Marsh Harbour, Spanish Wells and Treasure Cay. We love Exuma Island. It has the most beautiful waters in the world. You can look down and see the bottom. Off of Staniel Cay, there’s a little island with pigs, and you can swim with the pigs. It’s nature at its best. We’ve gone to Thunderball Grotto, where a James Bond movie was filled. There are hundreds of islands with beautiful water and empty beaches. We take a dingy and snorkel.

What’s the all-time favorite boat you’ve owned and why?

It’s this one. It accommodates our whole family wonderfully and we’ve had great experiences with it. George Newman has been our captain since we bought it, and he’s out of sight. He has never let us down.

What tender and water toys do you use?

We have a 16-foot Zodiac tender … I go all over the little islands by myself. It’s my toy and that’s how I explore.

What’s your advice to people who want to get into boating.

Be prepared for the bills. Know what you are getting into before you buy it. Also, if you are getting a larger boat, find an exceptional captain.

What boat show do you like to attend?

The Palm Beach Boat Show is big but not crazily big, and it’s very nice.

What’s your go-to meal or restaurant on the island? Why?How often are you there?

With so many good restaurants, we can’t single out one. We love Renato’s, Café L’Europe, Bistro Chez Jean-Pierre. We like the steaks in the Meat Market and at the Flagler Steakhouse, and PB Catch does a wonderful job with fish.

What’s your favorite annual event?

We really enjoy the antique shows at the convention center.
